Mount Meru

Mount Meru, standing at 4,562.13 meters (14,968 feet), is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and the fifth highest in Africa. Located within Arusha National Park, it offers trekkers a more challenging yet less crowded alternative to Mount Kilimanjaro. The mountain’s trails provide stunning vistas of the surrounding landscapes, including the striking Ash Cone and the crater. Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate the chance to see giraffes, buffaloes, elephants, and a variety of bird species along the way. The most popular route to the summit is the Momella Route, which usually takes 3-4 days and is favored by climbers looking to acclimatize before attempting Kilimanjaro.

The trekking experience begins at the Momella Gate, ascending through montane forests to Miriakamba Hut on the first day. The journey continues through moorland to Saddle Hut on the second day, with the final ascent to the Socialist Peak starting early on the third day to catch the sunrise. This challenging climb requires proper acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness. Guides are mandatory, and porters can assist with carrying equipment. The best times to climb Mount Meru are during the dry seasons, from June to October and from December to March, ensuring more stable weather conditions for a safer and more enjoyable trek.
