Mount Hanang

Mount Hanang, located in northern Tanzania, is the fourth highest mountain in the country, standing at 3,420 meters (11,220 feet). This extinct volcanic peak is part of the Hanang District in the Manyara Region and offers a unique trekking experience with fewer crowds compared to more famous Tanzanian mountains like Kilimanjaro and Meru. The climb is known for its diverse landscapes, including lush forests, open grasslands, and rocky summits. The trek to the summit provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding plains and Lake Balangida, making it a rewarding adventure for hikers and nature enthusiasts.

The trek to Mount Hanang’s summit typically starts from the town of Katesh, situated at the mountain’s base. The ascent usually takes 1-2 days, making it a shorter and more accessible climb for those with limited time. Hikers pass through a variety of ecosystems, starting with farmland and forests and gradually transitioning to alpine meadows and rocky terrain. The climb is moderately challenging, requiring a good level of fitness but not the technical expertise needed for higher peaks. The best time to climb Mount Hanang is during the dry seasons, from June to October and from December to March, ensuring more favorable weather conditions for a safe and enjoyable trek.
